Walter Gordon
Sasser, Sr.
Dec 22, 1958 — Feb 1, 2025
Millen
Walter Gordon Sasser, Sr., age 66, passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2025 at Augusta University Medical Center. Big Wally (as he was known to everyone) joined his wife, Sherrie, to forever walk in the fields of Heaven. He was born in Millen at the Mulkey Hospital on December 22, 1958 to Gordon Sasser and Juanita Oglesby Jenkins of Millen.
Big Wally graduated from Jenkins County High School in 1976 and immediately went to work at King of America at the age of 18 in 1977 as a janitor. Later he married the love of his life, Sherrie Carroll, and they began a family on "Sasser Hill", raising their two boys. His dedication and hard work while at King America payed off when he retired in 2023 as the Supervisor in Finishing Department after working his way up. He watched the walls of King America go up as it was built and come down after the company closed.
Big Wally was a member of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association. He grew up raising cows and continued this custom with his family, ensuring his boys and grandchildren knew the ins and outs of a cattle farm. He served as Chief of the North Jenkins Volunteer Fire Department for over a decade, retiring the title to someone he felt was worthy of it, but remaining Assistant Chief until his passing. He was also a board member of NJCVFD for over 25 years.
His biggest accomplishment was the start-up of the family business known as "Sasser and Sons" in 2005 which started with tree removal and other services. Over the past 25 years, Sasser and Sons has grown into multiple businesses that his boys ran. Big Wally was proud of all the Sasser and Sons endeavors and wanted each grandkid to learn all the trades. Even after his retirement, he stayed busy with all the businesses and maintaining the cattle. His favorite wrecker was a 90's International that he named Granny after his wife.
Big Wally was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and was baptized with his wife, Sherrie, at Scarboro landing before her heavenly departure in 2018.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife of 40 plus years.
He leaves behind his sons, Wally Sasser Jr. (Tara) and BJ Sasser, both of Millen; grandchildren, Trey, Shayla, Cami, Charleigh, Weslee and Blane, all of Millen; a great-grandson, Cohen Sasser, of Millen; his sisters, Faye Sasser of Sylvania, Debra Perryman (Louis) and Judy C. Joyner (Jeff), both of Millen; his step-mother, Betty Sasser, of Millen; and special friends, Cecelia Lee of Sylvania and Billy and Linda Parrish of Danville, Virginia.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home. The funeral procession will begin at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 5, 2025, starting at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home with his last ride going to Oak Hill Baptist Church, then to his final resting place in the Sasser Cemetery next to Station 3 in Oak Hill.
Active pallbearers are Jay Clayton, Joey Saxon, Willie Howard, Brandon Rogers, Matt Bazemore and Jamie Davis.
Honorary pallbearers are the North Jenkins Volunteer Fire Department and employees of Sasser and Sons.
