Mrs. Simone Marie Eugenie Bietry Barker, age 101, entered into rest on November 12, 2022. Simone was born in Vittel, France in 1921 to the late Marie and Alfred Bietry. She survived two brothers, Marcel and Alfred Bietry. She was orphaned at age 4 and lived in a Catholic orphanage until age 21.
She was married to the late Lt. Col. Gerald Joseph Barker in 1945 and came to America in 1947. In 1960 the family was stationed in Paris, France at SHAPE headquarters and made a home in Palaiseau on the outskirts of Paris. Their daughter, Patricia, attended Paris American High School for 3 years. They attended many balls and receptions at the Palace de Versailles and were guests at President De Gaulle's July 14 celebration at the Jardin des Tuileries. Living as a military family, they traveled extensively and took in a variety of cultures abroad and in the USA. Mrs. Barker was a member of the Army Officers' Wives' Club and hosted many teas and receptions. She moved from Augusta to Millen, Georgia, on August 2012 to live with her family. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Jerry) McMillan of Millen, 2 granddaughters, Suzi (Carey) Martin of Jesup, Denise (Tommy) Borck of Statesboro, 4 great grandchildren, Caleb and Cooper Martin, and Bailey and Kinsey Borck.
There will be a family memorial service at a later date and her ashes will be buried next to her husband at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.
