Shirley
Chance
Oct 7, 1955 — May 13, 2025
Perkins
Shirley Lena Chance, of Perkins, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home on May 13, 2025, at 3:57 AM. She was born on October 7, 1955, in Bulloch County, the daughter of Doyle Lanier and Dorothy Neal Lanier.
Shirley grew up in rural Candler County, surrounded by a large and loving family. She graduated from Metter High School in 1973.
At 22, Shirley married the love of her life, Shelton Chance. For 46 years, they shared a simple yet joyful country life together. She found happiness in the quiet beauty of nature and farm life—enjoying walks through the fields and woods of their home, caring for animals, tending their vegetable gardens, and growing flowers, especially fragrant ones. Jasmine was her favorite.
Shirley and Shelton had many adventures together, exploring the natural and historical wonders of our country. She retired after a fulfilling career at the Jenkins County Senior Center, where her compassion and dedication to caring for the elderly touched many lives.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Dorothy Lanier; her beloved brother, Tyson Lanier; and, very recently, her dear husband, Shelton—into whose loving embrace we now celebrate her return.
She is survived by her son, Seth (Shayna) Chance; her grandson, Rowan Chance; and her cherished sisters: Becky Powell, Debbie (Dwight) Singletary, Donna (Johnny) Scott, and Barbara Stevens. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including Raina Chance, whose unwavering care and companionship made it possible for Shirley to remain in her own home until the end of her days.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at Dry Branch Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member for many years. Minister Tim Fields will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 16, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. Shirley will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Pruitt Health Hospice of Swainsboro would be deeply appreciated. Without the compassionate support of their CNAs and nurses, caring for loved ones at home in their final days would be so much more difficult.
Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her—as a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, in-law, or friend. We take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with God and with the cherished loved ones who went before her.
