Obituary

Sarah Lewis Humphrey, 101, of Millen, GA, peacefully passed away on May 25, 2021 surrounded by loved ones, after a long happy life.

Sarah was born on June 20, 1919 to Robert Lee Lewis JR and Fannie Ethridge Lewis in the city of Millen, or as she liked to say a "little slice of heaven". Sarah graduated from Jenkins County High School where she was quite active in tennis and often challenged her future husband Harley P. Humphrey.

Sarah worked in banking, primarily with Bank of Millen for over 30 years, where she was passionate about her work and loved what she did for a living.

She married the love of her life, Harley P. Humphrey in California. Sarah had not traveled much outside Georgia, but managed to ride a train to California to marry Harley prior to his Naval ship's departure for the Pacific during World War II. Harley and Sarah did not have any children, but showered much love and affection on their nieces and nephews.  Sarah was lovingly known as "Tutter" to her "Pelham folks" as she liked to call them.

Sarah retired after over 3o years in banking. While retired, Sarah spent much of her time enjoying her friends and working in her flower beds battling her nemesis the dreaded "Georgia Thumper" grasshopper.  Her very dear friend Robert Reynolds and constant helper up to her death tried to share his knowledge of shrubs, flowers and pests, based on his experience as a long-time employee of the Georgia State Park system, but she had her own way of dealing with the tasks at hand. After suffering the loss of her beloved Harley, Sarah developed the habit of walking to the cemetery twice daily to visit his grave and continued this exercise for as long as she was mobile.   Later in years, she was able to stay in her own home due to the wonderful care of Annie Luke and Jackie Givens, whom she loved dearly.

Sarah was preceded in death by her Father, Robert Lee Lewis Jr, Mother, Fannie Ethridge Lewis, brother, Gilbert L Lewis and wife, Betty, loving husband Harley Humphrey and sister in law Dorothy Ward.

She is survived by nieces Jane Ward and Beth Lewis Barfield (Randall) and Nephews Larry Ward, Roy Ward (Tina), Taylor Ward (Penny), Mike Lewis (Krista), and many beloved great nieces and nephews.
