Larry Johnson was born on November 18, 1940 and died on October 11, 2020. He was a native of Jenkins County where he lived most of his life. He was a graduate of Jenkins County High School, Middle Georgia College, Troy State College, and Georgia Southern College. He was a coach in Chatham, Columbia and Jenkins Counties, a principal, a vice principal, a farmer, and a plantation manager. In every position he was totally committed to and enthusiastic about his work. He was a member of Fair Haven Methodist Church.
Larry's greatest pleasure was football, both playing and coaching. He was known to many in Jenkins County as "Coach." He received football scholarships to Middle Georgia College and Troy State College. He was a 1958 State High School Honorable Mention, a member of the Middle Georgia 1959 Junior College State Championship team, and named to the 1962 All-Conference team while at Troy State. He was an avid University of Alabama football fan.
He was preceded in death by his father James Matthew Johnson and his mother Sarah Black Johnson.
Graveside service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Fair Haven Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be immediately following the service.
Survivors include his wife Art Johnson; son Jay Johnson; brother Math Johnson (Debbie); nephew, Nathan Johnson; two nieces, Marah Johnson and Megan Oliver (Chris); and 3 great nieces.
