Obituary

Dr. Julian Wylie Daniel was born in Millen, Georgia on December 2, 1932. A son of the late Billy and Elizabeth Newton Daniel, Julian received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He went on to receive his Masters and Doctorate degrees from The Institute of Paper Technology in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dr. Daniel retired from the United States Army Reserves as a Colonel. One of his assignments was with the office of the Surgeon General.
He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for his service with the Boy Scouts of America.

His career included positions with Potlatch Forest Industries in Lewiston, Idaho, Union Camp in Savannah, Georgia as Technical Director of the Unbleached Paper and Board Division, Continental Forest Industries formerly Continental Can as General Manager of Engineering and Technology in Greenwich, Connecticut, and General Manager of the Engineering staff at the Augusta, Georgia division, Vice-President and General Manager of South Carolina Industries (Stone Container) Florence, South Carolina and Kimberly Clark of Coosa Pines, Alabama, where he was Director of Pulp Research Development. His career ended at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia upon being diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Dr. Daniel was a former member of The Georgia Historical Society, Sons of the American Revolution, The Hugeonots of South Carolina, The Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, The Georgia Tech Alumni Association (Tau Beta Pi), American Chemical Society, Past Director of The Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industries, United Way, and a member of First Baptist Church of Sylvania, Georgia.

He had a love for music and books. In his later years, as his vision deteriorated, he enjoyed listening to his collection of music and books on tapes.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Sue Herndon Daniel of Sylvania; a son, Jack Clinton Daniel (Stephanie) of Surrency, Ga; a daughter, Julie Anne Daniel Howle (Ken) of Darlington, SC, six grandchildren, Zack (Alesha) of Waycross, Ga., Ellie Daniel McKenzie (Josh) of Savannah, Ga., Julie Anne Daniel and Lauren Suzanne Daniel of Savannah, Ga., Kenneth Alan Howle, Jr. and Julian Alexander Howle of Greenville, SC , two Great-Grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Charlotte) of Hermosa Beach, CA., and a sister Jane Johnson of Millen, Ga.. Julian was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy.

Graveside services will be 11:00 am Tuesday at the Millen Cemetery with visitation prior to the service.

The family suggests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Sylvania, Georgia or Millen Baptist Church of Millen, Georgia.

Dr. Daniel's children express their gratitude for all their mother did to allow Dr. Daniel to live out his last years at home in as much comfort and dignity as possible. A special thanks also to The Ogeechee Hospice Home Health Services and to Latrel Jenkins.
