Mr. James D. Bennett "Danny", 72, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 after an extended illness.
Danny was a lifelong resident of Jenkins County, and he wore many different hats within the community. He was a teacher at the Jenkins County High School and went on to serve as principal of JCHS for many years. After his tenure as principal, he continued to serve as transportation director and then Superintendent for the Jenkins County School System. After retirement, he was elected to the Jenkins County Board of Education and served as Chairman of the Board until his death. Outside of education Danny also served as interim Sheriff for Jenkins County for a brief period. Danny devoted his life to humbly serving the people of this county, which he loved so dearly. He was a lifelong member of the Elam Baptist Church and also attended Garfield United Methodist Church in recent years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Betty Bennett, two sisters, June Purnell and Joyce Waters, and brother-in-law, Chris Suggs.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynne, and his two children, Jamie Bennett (Tabatha) of Garfield, Bess Bennett of Summertown, sister, Beth Suggs of Millen, father-in-law, Charles Mitchell of Statesboro and five grandchildren who he loved dearly.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Elam Baptist Church Cemetery. Please practice social distancing.
