Elizabeth (Bettye) Bargeron of Twin City passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Optim Health Care, Millen after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Twin City United Methodist Church with the Revs. Randall Smith, Christy Bandy, and Bernie Khaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Millen Cemetery.
Mrs. Bargeron was born in Twin City, the daughter of Harry Wheatley and Belle Bowie Wheatley. She grew up in Twin City and was a graduate of Emanuel County Institute. She attended the University of Georgia and a graduate of Georgia Southern University. After graduation she taught Kindergarten which she enjoyed very much. She taught In Swainsboro and Savannah.
In October 1964 she was married to Sidney Mell Bargeron, Jr. and they moved to Charles City, where she taught there, and helped organize the Head Start Program. They later moved to Tupelo, Ms., and returned to Jenkins County (Millen) in 1979, and she taught school in Jenkins County as well as Burke.
Mrs. Bargeron was a member of the Edith Cavell Chapter 193 Order of the Eastern Star and Chapter Gov. David Emanuel-Adam Brinson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Twin City United Methodist Church, and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed football and was a great fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, as well as ECI Bulldogs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sidney Mell Bargeron, Jr., and son, David Mell Bargeron; and brothers, Buzzy Wheatley and Dr. Joseph Wheatley.
Survivors are her two sisters-in-law, Gloria Bargeron of Millen and Joan Wheatley of Holton, KS; a niece, Pamela (Ted) Lutz of Topeka, KS, a nephew, Michael (Pam) Wheatley of Barrington IL, & great niece Emily Lutz of Topeka, Ks., and a number of cousins.
Pallbearers are Clark Dixon, Charles Stewart, John Allmond, G.W. Johnson Jr., Stephen Griffin, and Jimmy Mincey.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.
