Obituary

Carolyn Ruth Johnson Fields, 77, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 5, 2026 at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born in Jenkins County to the late John Alex Johnson, Jr. and the late Annie Ruth Walea Johnson. With the death of her parents, she was raised by the late Winton L. Johnson and the late Miriam Hendley Johnson.

Carolyn was a graduate of Georgia Southern College and devoted her life to helping families and children in Jenkins and surrounding counties. Some of her roles included Director of Family and Children Services, Director of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Ogeechee, Community Involvement Specialist with Hearts for Families and on the board of Family Enrichment and many other community service organizations.

She spent countless hours working on different programs and projects to improve the lives of families and children in the community and was a member of Elam Baptist Church. Carolyn enjoyed shopping with her grandchildren and going to her weekly beauty shop appointments.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Reginald Wayne Fields and brothers, Winton L. Johnson, Jr., Jay Grady Johnson and William Lee Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Fields Hill (Randy); two sons, Steven DeWayne Fields (Heather) and Christopher Shane Fields (Paula); two brothers John Alex Johnson and Tracy Alan Johnson (Karen) and 6 grandchildren.

The family would like to express our appreciation to her loving caregiver, Kim Young and to Alice Gadsden and Beth Dasher from Regency Southern Care Hospice.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Elam Baptist Church, funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the church cemetery following the service. The Reverend Butch Taylor and Reverend Lonnie Johnson will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Charley Waters, Chad Waters, Eason Waters, Lane Waters, Justin Johnson, Jason Johnson, Jonathan Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Elam Baptist Church Cemetery Maintenance Fund, 5199 Elam Road, Millen, Ga. 30442.
