Capt. Byron A. Scogins, age 80, died Monday, May 4, 2020 at his residence due to surgical complications.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 8, 2020 at Big Buckhead Church near Perkins. He will be entombed in the Columbarium at the Ft. Benning Military Cemetery at a later date.

Byron was born in Monticello, AR, was a retired U. S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War serving with the Second Infantry Battalion, 7 ^th Cavalry of the 1 ^st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile) where he earned several awards for valor. They include the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Purple Heart Medal for wounds with two oak leaf clusters. In addition to his other awards he wore the Combat Infantry badge and Parachutist badge. Byron had the honor to serve under Col. Hal Moore later Gen. Moore featured in the movie "We Were Soldiers". Byron studied Psychiatric Social Work at the University of Arkansas, Psychology at the University of Hawaii and received his Masters Degree in Psychology at the University of Miami. He later retired from Civil Service with the U. S. Government.

He is also featured in the book, "Borrowed Time" written by the 7 ^th Cavalry Medic Doc Kinney whom he served with in Vietnam. Several exploits involving Byron are featured in the book.

Survivors include his daughter, Donna Lacienski (Mike); his grandson, Judd Bramblett; granddaughter, Jessica Harrell (Jason); great granddaughter, Tori Bramblett and great grandson, Camden Harrell along with several nieces and nephews.
